Children’s Activity CampsWhat to expect
ISG Children’s Activity Camps are friendly residential weekends, and we usually hold 2 a year somewhere in the UK, often in the summer or autumn months. Children aged 8–16 years affected by ichthyosis come together – often for the first time. We usually have around 15-20 children attend.
Arrival is on the Friday. It’s normal to feel a bit nervous, especially if they don’t know anyone, but parents stay briefly to help them settle in. There’s always excitement choosing beds (top bunks go quickly!) and exploring the goodie bags filled with useful bits and plenty of treats.
Activities and friendships
Once settled, the children get to know the centre and the activities – such as climbing, zip wires, archery and team challenges. There’s something for everyone, and children are encouraged to join in at their own pace.
Very quickly, friendships begin to form. By Saturday, most are chatting, laughing and supporting each other through activities. Being around others who understand ichthyosis creates a sense of ease that can be hard to find elsewhere.
As one young person shared:
I enjoyed making new friends affected by ichthyosis because we shared experiences.

Growing in confidence
Evenings are more relaxed, with time to eat together, chat and unwind. Conversations often include everyday life with ichthyosis – some children share, others just listen, but all benefit.
Over the weekend, children often grow in confidence and independence. Being away from home, while supported by experienced volunteers, helps them feel more comfortable in themselves and their routines. Many leave feeling stronger and more positive about themselves and their condition.
As one parent said:
He has come back so much more confident and says it’s nice to feel like you fit in.
A welcoming opportunity
We understand this can feel like a big step, so children can bring a sibling if it helps. Camps are free to attend, funded by donations and fundraising, with a small deposit returned to the children during the weekend.
For many, it’s more than just a weekend away – it’s a chance to make friends, feel understood, and realise they’re not alone.
As one child reflected:
I didn’t really want to come to the camp because I thought it would be boring but it was really fun and exciting and I made new friends.

The History
The ISG started running these camps in 2014 with a pilot camp, and they have grown and become a huge success ever since. The idea came about as we identified there was a need for children to interact and meet others with ichthyosis, lessening the feelings of isolation.
